Your feet are covered most of the day. If you're diabetic, periodic screening is important for good health. Numbness is often a sign of diabetic foot and can mask a sore or wound.

Toes that rest on top of or press against each other can be seen in both newborns and adults. In infants, this may be due to how the baby was positioned during pregnancy. The condition often improves with time or may respond well to gentle stretching or taping. In adults, overlapping toes often develop from long-term pressure caused by wearing tight shoes, poor foot mechanics, or changes in the muscles and tendons. This can lead to discomfort, rubbing, or visible changes in the shape of the foot. Non-surgical solutions such as roomier footwear, padding, or toe separators are often helpful in mild cases. For more severe overlap or persistent pain, surgical correction may be considered. If you or your child is experiencing discomfort due to overlapping toes, it is suggested that you see a podiatrist to discuss the best approach for relief and care.

Hammertoe

Hammertoes can be a painful condition to live with. For more information, contact Phyllis Weinstein, DPM from California. Our doctor will answer any of your foot- and ankle-related questions.

Hammertoe is a foot deformity that affects the joints of the second, third, fourth, or fifth toes of your feet. It is a painful foot condition in which these toes curl and arch up, which can often lead to pain when wearing footwear.

Symptoms

  • Pain in the affected toes
  • Development of corns or calluses due to friction
  • Inflammation
  • Redness
  • Contracture of the toes

Causes

Genetics – People who are genetically predisposed to hammertoe are often more susceptible

Arthritis – Because arthritis affects the joints in your toes, further deformities stemming from arthritis can occur

Trauma – Direct trauma to the toes could potentially lead to hammertoe

Ill-fitting shoes – Undue pressure on the front of the toes from ill-fitting shoes can potentially lead to the development of hammertoe

Treatment

Orthotics – Custom made inserts can be used to help relieve pressure placed on the toes and therefore relieve some of the pain associated with it

Medications – Oral medications such as anti-inflammatories or NSAIDs could be used to treat the pain and inflammation hammertoes causes. Injections of corticosteroids are also sometimes used

Surgery – In more severe cases where the hammertoes have become more rigid, foot surgery is a potential option

Common Foot Disorders in the Elderly

Foot disorders in the elderly population are common due to natural aging, changes in biomechanics, and the long-term effects of chronic conditions. As people age, their feet may lose strength, flexibility, and cushioning. This process increases the risk of developing arthritis, bunions, hammertoes, and poor circulation. Biomechanical changes can alter walking patterns, leading to instability and discomfort. These issues can impact mobility, independence, and overall well-being. A podiatrist can assess the feet, diagnose underlying problems, and provide personalized treatment, including custom orthotics and footwear recommendations. If you are experiencing any foot pain, it is suggested that you schedule a visit with a podiatrist who can treat various foot conditions and guide you on foot care tips.

Proper foot care is something many older adults forget to consider. If you have any concerns about your feet and ankles, contact Phyllis Weinstein, DPM from California. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

The Elderly and Their Feet

As we age we start to notice many changes in our body, but the elder population may not notice them right away. Medical conditions may prevent the elderly to take notice of their foot health right away. Poor vision is a lead contributor to not taking action for the elderly.

Common Conditions

  • Neuropathy – can reduce feeling in the feet and can hide many life-threatening medical conditions.
  • Reduced flexibility – prevents the ability of proper toenail trimming, and foot cleaning. If left untreated, it may lead to further medical issues.
  • Foot sores – amongst the older population can be serious before they are discovered. Some of the problematic conditions they may face are:
  • Gouging toenails affecting nearby toe
  • Shoes that don’t fit properly
  • Pressure sores
  • Loss of circulation in legs & feet
  • Edema & swelling of feet and ankles

Susceptible Infections

Diabetes and poor circulation can cause general loss of sensitivity over the years, turning a simple cut into a serious issue.

Understanding Plantar Warts

Plantar warts are small, rough growths that develop on the soles of the feet due to the human papillomavirus. They often appear as hard, grainy lesions with tiny black dots in the center and may cause pain while walking or standing. These warts can be mistaken for calluses but are often more tender and grow inward due to pressure from standing. They are commonly spread in moist environments like locker rooms or public showers. Individuals with weakened immune systems or those who walk barefoot are at higher risk. A podiatrist can diagnose plantar warts and offer treatments such as topical therapy, cryotherapy, or removal. If you have developed a plantar wart, it is suggested that you seek professional care from a podiatrist to ensure an accurate diagnosis and effective relief from discomfort.

Plantar warts can be very uncomfortable. If you need your feet checked, contact Phyllis Weinstein, DPM from California. Our doctor will assist you with all of your foot and ankle needs.

About Plantar Warts

Plantar warts are the result of HPV, or human papillomavirus, getting into open wounds on the feet. They are mostly found on the heels or balls of the feet.

While plantar warts are generally harmless, those experiencing excessive pain or those suffering from diabetes or a compromised immune system require immediate medical care. Plantar warts are easily diagnosed, usually through scraping off a bit of rough skin or by getting a biopsy.

Symptoms

  • Lesions on the bottom of your feet, usually rough and grainy
  • Hard or thick callused spots
  • Wart seeds, which are small clotted blood vessels that look like little black spots
  • Pain, discomfort, or tenderness of your feet when walking or standing

Treatment

  • Freezing
  • Electric tool removal
  • Laser Treatment
  • Topical Creams (prescription only)
  • Over-the-counter medications

To help prevent developing plantar warts, avoid walking barefoot over abrasive surfaces that can cause cuts or wounds for HPV to get into. Avoiding direct contact with other warts, as well as not picking or rubbing existing warts, can help prevent the further spread of plantar warts. However, if you think you have developed plantar warts, speak to your podiatrist. He or she can diagnose the warts on your feet and recommend the appropriate treatment options.
